New millenium (2000+)

With more financial independence, and reconnected with his family in the Philippines, Joser started to travel back to visit Mommy, Kingsley and Bon annually (and from 2001 with Malcolm too). He also travelled several times to California to visit his extended Hernandez family, particularly his cousin, Kuya Art and Ate Bessie, and their daughter, Queenie, as well as friends, Ricky Liwanog and Carmen Ortega. In London he continued his friendship with Abraham and Maurice, often meeting them at a favourite Turkish restaurant in Finsbury Park. When Abraham moved to the south of France, he and Malcolm visited him in Villefranche. He opened his home to visitors and relatives too. He would play host to many guests from abroad, including Mathew Hernandez (his cousin's grandson), Ricky from California, and a friend Josef Burri from Zuerich, Switzerland. He became great friends with a work colleague, Raquel, and her husband Patrick and daughter Shella, and would often meet them for meals in town or family meals at their home. He also travelled with another colleague, Joy Gallagher, to visit Josef in Zuerich, relatives in Berlin and his partner Malcolm in Vienna. He would regularly meet Joy and Raquel for lunch at the noodle bar where they would gossip about everything happening at work. He also would tittle-tattle with his good friend Yap at work, where they would decide everything that was wrong and how to put it right. Joser was very careful of his possessions, he conscientiously folded his clothes and always put shoe trees into his shoes to maintain their shape. He had great style, taste and an eye for quality. He carefully coordinated his outfits, planning carefully what he would wear the next day, and had a large collection of pashmina scarves. He also loved jewelry, especially diamonds, and became very knowledgeable about the subject. He delighted in perfumes and scents, and vitamins. He also had a passion for skin care products. It was almost impossible to walk past a chemist or specialist skin care shop without him wanting to “just have a look”. He said that since "he didn’t drink or do drugs, he needed a vice – and that was skin care products!" Joser loved his food. Among his favourite styles were Chinese, Thai, Filipino and Italian, though he could be quite content eating spare ribs, a good curry or simply fish and chips. If you showed reticence about another portion, he would say: “Go on – have it”. Ironically he took a great interest in health foods, and became something of a tea connoisseur, importing exotic teas from around the world. He read widely and deeply: art, history, biographies of the aristocracy as well as gossip about celebs (in "Hello!" magazine). He also was a Daily Telegraph reader and was perfectly content simply reading the daily paper. He had an unusually large number of dictionaries, which supported his extensive vocabulary and his proficiency at Scrabble. He also enjoyed museums and art galleries, and became quite knowledgeable in fine art. He would often be able to identify a painter merely from the artist's style. His love of reading meant that Joser had much material from which to draw in his conversations. He was always very entertaining. He picked up and used catchphrases: “Luvverlyy”, “you’re a biiitcchh” and “wha’evaahh”. He would make up nicknames for people, both close friends and people in the street ("there goes the Erzherzogin von Baden picking up her Sacher Torte!"). He was very observant and had good taste – he would remember the things that pleased you, and you would be surprised when later he would give a perfect present. Joseph’s mother had taught him that you must always be good to people who are good to you, and this created an incredible synergy with like-minded people. His well-balanced and developed personality was supplemented by good manners, an intense care about others, and a thoughtfulness and kindness that touched many people's lives and hearts.
