In 1981 Joser won a scholarship to the illustrious Ateneo de Manila university, Quezon City, run by the Jesuits. He made many friends there, several of whom he kept in touch with later in life. One of his best friends, Amor, came from a less well-off family, and her sister tells that Joser would forego the university dining room to eat packed lunch outside with Amor. He was a member of the Glee Club (Joser had a beautiful singing voice), and played basketball. In 1985 he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management, and the graduation citation reads: "Joser never ceases to be the life of a conversation – the guy knows and talks about everything and everyone! His superior intelligence permeates even his chitchats with friends. His Lordship stunned everyone when he showed up in school looking as thin as a rod. Hours spent on workouts in the plush Manila Garden gym really did the trick. Thus the title, Lord Joser, Earl of Slimweights, Conqueror of 'Fifteepawnds'. However, he will always be remembered for his vibrant personality, genuine friendship, and creative talents."
